Blend door and actuator seem to be fine. But the spindle pivot is broken. Can I remove it and place a new one without having to worry about the door moving out of place?
I saw videos of people cutting the plastic and I do not want to do that.

Thank you so much for the prompt reply.

Not sure if I am understanding the picture fully but the piece that is broken is the white pin that connects the actuator to the door to make it move (open/close).
Image attached is not my car but that is the part that is broken.
It is two pieces.
(Outside) that acts as a connector between actuator and door. Not broken.
(Inside) pin that holds the door and gives it movement. Broken.

That would be part two in the image the master loaded. It goes through the hole and snaps onto the plastic axle the door turns on. It can be replaced but you cannot pull it free with the case assembled. The inner part has two wide slots and inside the piece is a molded retainer collar. As it goes over the shaft it expands and snaps in place. To assemble you put it through the hole in the case, then push the doors axle in and it locks in. Cutting an access hole is about the only way unless you remove the entire HVAC carrier and open it that way.

What I do to repair them, if the owner approves, is drill some 1/8" holes at four corners, then cut between them with a vibrating cutter and remove the piece. Clean up the edges and any plastic swarf. Now repair the door driver and test it. Now to reinstall the access panel I will use four short sheet metal screws. hold the panel in place and screw in two screws diagonally, then the other two. Now use either black silicone or similar (two part stick epoxy works but is not fun to remove for the next repair) and fill the cut line and over the screws. Let it cure fully. Probably similar to the videos.

I can't move from hot to cold with knob. The previous owner put a screw in a white knob on the passenger side. I move that to get heat. It does not have climate control. When I turn off the vehicle it goes back to cool. I can hear the blend doors moving. I have already replaced the actuator. Any ideas of a fix? Also when on vent it blows on floor and defrost.

Welcome to 2CarPros.

I'm not sure I understand. What has the new switch replaced? As far as the temperature issue, the vehicle has a blend air door actuator. It is an small electric motor that moved the temp door to different positions to provide different tempertures.

Can you explain the switch that was replaced? Also, I am going to provide the directions for actuator replacement. Locate the actuator and see if anything has been done to it. Also, see if it working when you try to change temperatures.

try pulling the hvac fuse with key on for 60 seconds then reinstall, sometimes it resets if that doesn't work see if actuator worksit may be vacuum operated.

I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4.0L engine. The A/C and heat blows fine, but usually will not switch from A/C to heat or vice versa. Sometimes, since it's a dual zone climate control system, it gets stuck on heating one side and cooling the other. I checked the blend door and it is not cracked, bent, or at all broken (possibly replaced by previous owner). I replaced both blend door actuators while in there and put it back together. It's still acting the same.

Previously, I had a problem with the blower motor not running. I replaced the resistor with a used one and haven't had a problem with the blower since then.

Now what?

check for a vacuum leak, it may have a bad hose coming from engine and not giving enogh vacuum to operate the actuators.

then see if they are getting power and pull the hvac fuse for 60 seconds as they may reset. Our manual said they were but it can be wrong.

Sorry I forgot to mention that I already checked that before. They don't always get power. I can adjust the temperature and nothing comes up on the voltmeter. 5 minutes later I'll get a reading when I adjust the temp. It will work a few times, and then stops working again. I have pulled that fuse and reset the system too. It worked ok for a few minutes, and then stopped again.

I don't have any scanner but I pulled the codes using the built in method. It gave me code 54 and code 56 (basically pointing to a failure of the blend doors to move properly). I disconnected the battery for a few minutes, reconnected it, set the controls to auto, and then turned the key on to recalibrate it. The codes came back again. I've already had the blend door and actuators checked.

I read your page that you can change out the blend door actuator in 15 mins (it will probably take a little more time). Can this be applied to my car? Passenger side is blowing hot and the driver side is blowing cold. A friend of mine said it would take more like 5 hours.

OK as your issue is that the drivers side is not responding properly you are in luck. The drivers side blend door motor is located right behind the glove box and is not difficult to change. Disconnect the battery negative terminal. Remove the glove box, remove the trim panel under the dash. Then remove the electrical connector on the actuator and then the 2 screws. Remove the actuator. Install the new one. replace the wiring and covers. Reconnect the battery cable. Turn the heater temp controls to full hot and start the engine. The system will run a calibration and you should be able to tell if the actuator was the issue.

Book time says 0.3 hours, or about 20 minutes which is about right.

Hi Steve, when I turn on the A/C, the driver's side is fine , it blows cold, it's the passenger side that blows hot that is the issue....I was told that the blend door actuator is located behind the airbag on this model and it would take 5 hrs. of work. I'm going to try Freon first to see if that is the problem but when the last mechanic looked at it, he removed the door as it was broken off the actuator so I am thinking the blend door actuator in total will need to be replace. I was told that they would have to go in under the dash and pretty much remove it all. So, am I being told the truth or can this be done in an hour or so, just wanted to clarify. Thanks.

OK you are looking for cold. With it being winter I figured the opposite and you were looking for heat. You must be out in the southwest. In my area AC is not even on the radar yet.

In that case it is not a 20 minute job. The dash has to come out, the AC system has to be disconnected, the heater core drained and disconnected as well. Then you can remove the entire heater case. The actuator for the passenger side is on the back of the case.

Adding R134A will do nothing. Both sides use the same heater core and AC evaporator. The doors inside the case determine if you get cold or hot air by directing the air through the appropriate path. As you have cold air at the drivers side the AC is working good, just isn't being directed to the passenger side.

If one of the blend doors was removed it is even more work as the case has to be split to replace the door. While it is out and split I would probably replace the heater core and the evaporator, they are 18 years old and probably getting thin in spots.

If it was me and I was thinking of doing the repair myself, I would be very tempted to visit a you-pull-it yard and get a complete replacement heater case assembly from an identical vehicle. This would give you a practice run for your own vehicle. Test everything on it. Replace the heater core and the evaporator and make sure all is OK. Then tear apart the car you have, you could then save some time as you would remove the one you have and install the "new" one.

If you take it to a shop you will get it returned faster but it will be expensive. Your call on that. One advantage of a shop is that if they do the job and the dash rattles or the system does not work right, they will repair it.

Good luck

Strange, The unit uses the same core for both sides, shouldn't have changed it. But if it works and you have cold air then good job.
Here's hoping it stays that way. I'm still waiting for AC weather here... It was a whole 42 degrees today !!

Quick question, how many blend door actuators are in my vehicle I know there is one located on passenger side, where is the other (s) located. (I think there is only two) Since the dash will have to be pulled out, your other guy said to replace the evaporator and heater core because of the age of the car, which I am going to do.

Second question: I know it will take about five hours (from quote) to replace blend door, how many hours will it add to replace the evaporator and heater core and the other blend door actuator ( Will it be seven hour or the same, five?)

Hello,

The heater core job and evaporator will take 6 hours according to the manual. You will need to do the a/c vacuum down and recharge, here is a guide for that.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/re-charge-an-air-conditioner-system

and

For the heater core

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/replace-heater-core

Here is a guide that will help you get the blend door actuators replaced.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/replace-blend-door-motor

Here are some diagrams (below) to give you reference to the job on your car

Please let me know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

Best, Ken

The actuator that controls the passenger side is locked or stuck. i only get cold air. after research i find out that i need to pull the dash out and the air conditioning to access the actuator.
I was wondering if i could just not use the actuator that is bad and only use the good one to control both doors?

Sorry, the system does not work that way. The actuators control the doors directly and are in different locations on the HVAC box. I do know of people who have decided they do not like the electric units and have replaced them with cable controls. But that is a bit extreme.

thanks for responding Steve.
i decided to modify things a little different than factory. lol
Now it is controlled by the drivers side only and i am fine with that. glued the two doors together and cut the notches out of the rear one and removed the notch on the other shaft so it just freely turns.
Have a great new year!
