Clicking noise from transmission or axles when accelerating

When I accelerate there is a loud clicking/ticking noise. When the vehicle is in neutral and I rev the engine there is no sound. It only happens when I press the gas and am in any gear and gets faster as I go faster. If I am driving and take my foot off the gas the sound goes away. This just happened and I’m confused on if it’s the CV axles or something in the transmission. I placed the car on jack stands and visibly see the faster the CV axle moves the faster the noise and then the CV stops the noise stops unfortunately the noise sounds louder on top by the flywheel. Do the CV axles only move when the gas is pressed? The noise is only when I press the gas. Any advice?

Clearly it is a rotational noise so that means it is either the axle itself or the differential inside the transmission as that is the only two things spinning at that rate.

If it were me, I would remove the axle shaft and inspect the CV axle and then retest the vehicle the same way you just did on jack stands.

Let me know what you find but this sounds like a bearing noise that is most likely in the differential inside the transmission.

Replaced CV axles and noise is still there going to have to open transmission I believe at this point.

Unfortunately that is the only option at this point. I suspected it was a bearing due to the pattern of the noise but it is not always the case. Let me know what info you need, if any, and I will send it over. Thanks

Thank you. I plan on taking the transmission out this weekend or next weekend and will update what I find.

So I changed the entire transmission out and the noise is gone. Not sure what part failed but definitely internal. I couldn’t see any damage in the differential openings but seals were definitely leaking. Also changed through out bearing clutch and flywheel while I had it open. Nothing appeared to be wrong with them. Wish I had more information but I’m going to scrap old transmission and not going to open or attempt rebuild. Took about 11-12 hours total to complete job transmission was $500.00 and bought clutch kit and flywheel off eBay for around $120.00 total.

Awesome. 11-12 hours is not far off what the book calls for so you did it pretty quickly. Good job. I didn't think you would see anything unless you took it apart and pressed the bearings out as I suspect it is a failed bearing. However, the fact is you fixed it and probably paid less then a third of the price it would take to have someone do this for you.
