Cleaning the pipe and the part the EGR attaches to

I am replacing the EGR Valve on this Buick Century and have taken the old one off. I need to know the best way to clean the pipe that runs to the exhaust manifold. What kind of cleaner? Is the pipe easily removable?
Also the engine part that the valve bolts to. How is the best way to clean it without removal?
Any tips or other cleaning that needs to be done while I am "under the hood"?

Should I spray some type of cleaner into the hole to remove the carbon buildup?
Is it safe to squirt something like carb cleaner into the pipe going to the exhaust to clean it?

you can if you want if there is a heavy build up though it won't do much. Gm and Ford both sell decarbonizer which you have to put in engine then let sit but most of the time it won't go to egr system.
