My wife was having problems starting her car. there was no clicking noises it just occasionally would not start. I removed the battery positive first then ground and cleaned the posts and terminals and reconnected the battery ground first then positive. Starting issue is resolved, but now I have the check engine light on and the dreaded red lightning bolt. The car idles at about 1300 rpm's now and is stuck in limp mode. Engine runs rough in drive or reverse. I have driven it up and down our neighborhood and it has been idling for about three hours. I was hoping that like my vehicle the computer need to relearn all it engine settings and I know it takes some time. How long before these lights go off after reconnecting the battery?

you need a scanner to make them go out. check for a vacuum leak and clean throttle plate on both sides then get scanned for codes if any auto parts can do a basic one, if they cannot get a code then a mechanic will have to do it with a professional scanner.

Hi Willaim2u,

Here is a link to an article that features written step by step instructions and pictures explaining how to do the scan yourself, also I have included a link to our YouTube channel with a how to video on code scanning. Most scanners are inexpensive to purchase, you can purchase one online from sites like Amazon.com. Once you have the codes please get back to us so that we can further assist you.
