As I read through some old posts, I found the one below. I have the exact same problem with an 1982 CJ8 that I am buying. It has only been driven about 250 miles in the past 10 years. They replaced the fuel pump and supposedly dropped the tank and cleaned out the old gas. I would really appreciate some help.

“My 1984 jeep cj7 stalls while driving or while stopping at a stop sign or as soon as I put it in neutral to coast. It also has a hard time starting up and I have to pump the gas pedal and I have to let it warm up before it will run. When i'm driving down the road first and second gear are usually fine but when I shift to third it starts shutting down and I can pump the gas and keep it going. We replaced the fuel pump but it still does it”.

Are you capable of doing a good tune up?

Has anything else been replaced other than the fuel pump?

(like plugs/ wires/ fuel filter/ distributor cap/ rotor button)

How about laying your hood against the windshield frame. Remove the breather and take me a really good, well lit left side/ right side/ overhead pic of the engine. Over the years things get changed, I might just catch something that needs attention in a good pic!

Do you have/can you get a dwell/ tachometer meter or a vacuum gauge and a plain Jane timing light to do some tuning? Doing this by "ear" is almost impossible.

I'll aid you all I can, I've owned nothing but CJ's ever since I was allowed on the road in 1981.
