2000 Chrysler Van Engine Knocking

There will be 6 connecting rods connected to the CRANKSHAFT. Depending on the 'speed' of the knock (in time with the speed of the crankshaft or with camshaft), I would probably start removing the connecting rod caps. Be sure to mark them with a punch. (i.e. First rod cap from the front of the engine gets 1 mark. The second gets 2, etc...) After marking them, remove them one at a time and examine the bearings. It will probably come off with the cap but occasionally stays stuck to the crankshaft. Inspect it for a 'copper' color or to see if it's galded badly. If you DO find one (or more) in bad shape, inspect the crankshaft at the respective journal (where that cap came from) and see if the crankshaft is scarred or galded. If so, there are a few options. My first recommendation would be to replace the engine. You can buy a NEW or REFURBISHED long block (with heads) or a short block (without heads). You can also get a used engine from a salvage yard. OR, you can attempt to rebuild it yourself or have someone rebuild it. Keep in mind that if the crankshaft is damaged very much, it'll have to be replaced and that can get pretty pricey unless you get one from a salvage yard. I would rebuild ONLY as a last resort. Try the route that gives you the BEST warranty. If you have more questions, repost and I'll help you.
