97 T&C AWD Mini Van Dies while I am driving

Hi, I am the owner of a 1997 Chrysler Town & Country All Wheel Drive Mini Van with 190,000 miles I am having a problem that I have been unable to resolve. When I am driving my van and the weather is very hot outside my van will start cutting out like it is running out of gas and the RPM gauge will bounce around and drop to 0 and then die. I can get it to start back up and sometimes it will be okay but most often it will repeat the action and die again and then eventually it will start and I can continue on to my destination.

My husband is a very good mechanic and has replaced several parts without resolving the problem. Do you have any suggestion on what could be my problem with my van? Thanks!

For anyone who might be having the same problem. My husband asked around to some of his mechanic friends and they suggested that it might be the crankshaft position sensor. We have replaced that sensor and that seems to have allievated the problem. Good luck and I hope this will help out those having a simular problem.

It sounds like I am having the same problem. Our 98 T&C with 3.8L engine cuts out intermittantly. It happens most often under certain conditions.
1. just after startup while idling
2. upon deacceleration when reaching lower speeds and shifting into lowest gears
3. when the car is hot
However, it will also happen while driving. If it cuts out at highway speeds, the service engine light comes on, the transmission gets a good jerk, and often the car will restart upon attempting to accelerate i.e. maintaining pressure on the accelerator pedal or stepping down on the accelerator pedal.
We've had the crankcase position sensor replaced but it did not fix the problem.
The problem isn't getting worse i.e. occurring more frequently over time, but it is a nusiance and can happen as many as 4-5 times over my 25 miloe commute to work. Help!!
