I was experiencing engine performance problems: Poor acceleration, rough idling, occasional backfires particularly when my engine was cold or had not been running for more than 15 minutes. My mechanic replaced the EGR valve. I experience the same performance problems over the next 3 days (about 200 miles) but then it seemed to stop after that. Does a new EGR valve take time to acclimate to its new environment before it starts working properly?

EGR valve goes to work right away, but your PCM will take 2 uninterrupted cycles to adjust to the new inputs from the new EGR valve.
