Engine Mechanical problem
1998 Chrysler Town and Country 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

I have a 1998 Town and Country that will not start at times. Primarly, when it's hot and sits a while, it will start. We have no way of knowing when or if the van will start. I love this van, but have put so much money into it recently trying to find the problem, on one hand I want to keep it and the other I just want to get rid of it. There are no codes for them to trace and when we take it to the mechnanic, it does not act up, so it's hard to tell. The cam or cam shaft sensor has not yet been checked nor the fuel pump as far as I know. Please HELP!!!

I've a 99 T&C and it also does randomly start it will turn over 6 times and stall out each time on the 7th it wont do anything, used to take 15min - 1 hour to start after that, but now it takes days... I've brought it to the dealership 5x and they can't fix, heard that could be crank sensor, cam sensor EGC sensor or fuel pump???? taking it in this friday, will let you know if I have any luck.

sapeachey, thank you very much for the reply and I wish you luck with your mechanic. There is something about the delayed starting (6 or 7 times) before it goes completely dead, but no one seems to know. Also, does your cluster not work at times as well?

I would check fuel pressure and engine coolant temp sensor, sensor first

cluster? by that do you mean dash gauges (speedometer/rpm/gas...) yes they will flat line also when I am driving, but I learned if I smash the top of the dash with my hand in the right spot they will come back on.

if you hit the dash and the cluster starts working again then you have a short in the harness to the cluster. you can pull it out and check it,its probably just loose

just spoke with mechanic and he said that he doesn't think that the starting problem and the cluster gauges going out are not related problems. but everyone that has this starting problem, their gauges seem to flat line as well. But he said the my van is running fine now (of course) so I'm going to leave it there till it wont start again......so they can hopefully diagnose this problem!

I've just read that someone that is having the same problems as us with the random starting and the cluster not working sometimes, they said that they replaced the cluster and they've had no problems since. I called my dealership as my van is sitting there waiting to be fixed and told his this, but he said that there is no way that would be the problem with the random starting failures. so I'm still lost!!!

mechanic thinks it the SKIM security key Immobilization module, will let you know if works.

I've come to the conclusion that I am giving up on my town and country, mechanic said that for the parts (SKIM module and something else) its going to cost $1700.00 plus labor!!! to me its not worth it.
