After replacing a dead battery on 04 sebring my tranny is shifting wrong and hanging... did the battery switch cause this? At first it would lerch into 1st after you stopped. While going down the road sometimes it will hang in a lower gear. When you are stopped the speedometer reads we are traveling at 15 mph in park. This started right after the new battery was installed.

What happened here is that the battery was disconnected and causes the computer to lose its memories and has to go thru a relearning process-Scan the computer for any codes and get back with it-

Check the cables to the battery. Make sure that they are free of corrosion and are tight. If they are clean and tight, open the fuse box under the hood, make sure all the fuses and fusible link and in good order, none is burnt out. If yes, and you still don't have any power (lights don't even turn on), remove the battery from vehicle and have it load-tested at your local auto parts store. Most of them will do this for free.

Re-install the battery. If you still don't have power to anything, you have bad connection somewhere. If you have power but no start, (you did mention you have a remote - alarm system), the alarm probably is preventing you from turning on the vehicle from the power failure.

A replacement battery is purchased with a taller and larger battery for more cranking amps. If the battery post makes contact to the metal of the underhood, could it cause the car to just die randomly while driving the car and then take a few minutes or even up to an hour before it starts up again then drives and randomly die again?

Hi there,

If the battery is shorting out on the bonnet, you run the risk of do considerable amount of damage to the electrical system, including spiking the ECU and destroying expensive equipment. Get the correct battery fitted.
