I have a 2000 chrysler sebring convertible that makes a terrible grinding noise from the front of the vehicle when stopping. It starts off softly and gets louder and the vehicle slows. I sounds like metal grinding. If I brake really hard it does not make this noise. But I don't want to have to slam on my brakes every time. The brake rotors have been replaced some time ago. The brake pads have just been replaced and the grinding noise stopped for about a week. Now it has come back. It does not do it everytime time I brake but I have noticed it doing it more often. If I let up off the brake the noise will stop. I also notice a soft thumping at all speeds, and it seems to be coming from the front. Could it be bad wheel bearings?

Its possible. Raise and support the vehicle and check for noise when rolling tire or play in the wheel
