1997 Chrysler Sebring Water pump and timing belt

The car has been looked at, I was told I needed a timing belt that it jumped time, and any time you change the timing belt you should change the water pump that they go hand in hand. Is this true? Also I was told that we could of bent some rods and he would not know untill he replaced the water pump and timing belt. He wonts to charge me 500.00 for the water pump and timing belt. After he gets that fixed he would know if the rods are bent and if so it will cost me another 1500.00. Is there not a way he can look to see if rods are bent before I spend 500.00.

he can do a compression check first that will give him an idea if the valves are bent. but as far as water pump and timing belt. thats about right. because there is alot to it they have to go inside the timing chain cover wich is a bad job in itself .and because of that ,is the reason why you want to change the water pump, because you do not want to go back inside there to have to change the water pump a month down the road. do you understand what im saying?
