I noticed my alternator belt is chewed up and needs to be replaced. I was able to loosen the idler pulley to release the tension, but unless I am missing something, it seems that I first have to remove the power steering belt, which would make this process more involved. Am I correct on this?

If the power steering belt is on the outer pulley, then yes, it has to come off first. That's not unusual.
