ac quit cooling and saw white smoke come from under the car. checked when got home and the compressor was kicking in and out a few times and then vented out the releif valve

there's either an obstruction in your system or the compressor has failed.

The only way to know for sure is to place a gauge manifold on the test ports and isolate the system components.

If you think you can tackle this yourself, I'll walk you through it. But unless you're already familiar with A/C systems, I really don't recommend you mess with this yourself, as it's very complicated.
