2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser stuttering

While driving home last night my engine started to sputter and loose all power on me. I checked the oil and all my lines and nothing was dripping. this morning it was running fine, but at lunch it started to do the same thing. when it starts to sputter on me, the car jerks and does not go up in RPM even if i put my foot on the gas. I was able to limp it home, but do not know what the problem is. could it be bad gas? i just filled it yesterday morning before this happened.
