2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser Grinding/Scraping and Shudder

Hi.

When I accelerate from a start, or hard at low speeds, I hear a grinding/scraping noise from what appears to be the front passenger's side. It goes away as the speed increases. When I put the car in reverse, there is a horrible bang initially, and the car vibarates the entire time, whether moving or not.

Maybe CV joint check it out if boot torn then that's it if boot O.K. check for excessive movement. Also check out strut mount.

After an short inspection, it appears that at least my top motor mount has come completely undone. The bolt looks like it just vibrated out rather than sheered out. About a year ago I filled the mounts and reinstalled them. I did not have a torque wrench, and it seems as though I did not tighten them down enough. Nearly certainly this will be the key to the loud bang and rumbling in reverse.

I have also heard that the scraping sound that I hear upon acceleration could be traced in many cases to the heatshield around the exhaust manifold being loose. After poking around some more, it appears as though the shield is indeed a little loose, though how it could cause the scraping sound I get is beyond me. I'll tighten it down, though, and see if that solves that issue.

My CV axle appears to be fine, though I am uncertain about what you mean by 'excessive movement'. The boots, in any case, seem unharmed.

Once I've affected some repairs, I'll report back on my discoveries.

Good job that would cause the bump, bang and heat shields will scrape. Hope that solves problem
