high idle speeds

my pt cruiser has recently upon start up been idling at approx 1500rpm if i leave it for a couple of mins it returns to normal 800rpm, but if i drive away i keep getting high revs even whilst changing gears and braking to a stop with the clutch in any help please?

It sounds like you have a vacuum leak which you can find by using this guide.

Common leak paths include the and throttle body gaskets, and of course, any of the engine's vacuum fittings, hoses and accessories.

Yep, I followed the guide and sure enough I found the main vacuum line going the booster had a suck hole in it. all fixed! I love this site.
