I am getting a high pitched squealing noise when I start the car and it gets louder when I press on the gas pedal..

My mechanic says that I have a bad belt tensioner but he says what is really causing the problem is power steering pump. He says that the bearings are bad.

Steering feels fine there. There are no leaks nor is it tough to steer.

Any thoughts

If you remove the belt, you can rotate the pully on the pump and check it for play as well.

Not being able to hear it from here makes it more difficult. Does the whine get worse when the wheel is turned hard?

Bearings going bad will not produce notable problems/symptoms right away in many cases, but can start off as a noise.

This can be checked with a stethescope as well.

does not get louder when turning the wheel. Only when you press on the gas pedal.

May well be the ps pump...or other pulley, belt or tensioner. It may be a combination of them as well.

After looking at all of the postings here my mechanic called me and told me that it was both the pully and the pump (which was in fact mentioned on the site). I therefore told him to replace both parts.

About an hour later he called me back and said that when he replaced the pully the noise went away.

I commend this site for the info. Although my mechanic was honest enough he also discovered that I had some knowledge and he decided to double check it.

GOOD WORK!!!
