Recently driving along, when I heard a loud noise and thought my muffler was dragging along the road. Not so. Drove to my mechanic, who after examination, told me my transmission was starting to fail. He said he had to put a quart of transmission fluid in the van. There are no other symptoms of a failing transmission - no gear slipping - except the fluid is leaking slightly. I do not know what to do about this. Whether to believe there is really a transmission problem, whether to replace the transmission - my van is not young and has high mileage - or whether to purchase a new car. Any advise you could give me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi:
Is the noise ongoing? Do you know where the trans is leaking from? Did he explain why he felt the trans is starting to fail?

If this is an overdrive transmission (604 trans) you can tell alot by using a scanner (diagnostic computer) you can get codes out and also see what the CVI's are (clutch volume index). very good indicator for trans wear. Also I suggest fixing the leak. cant really tell what the noise was so not to sure it was trans related. good luck
