1996 Chrysler Cirrus Water Pump Repair

My vehicle started leaking coolant and I was told it was probably the water pump and that it and the timing chain would have to be replaced. Can this be done myself or does it have to be done at a garage and if so, what is the approximate cost for the repairs?

Before anything, where is the leak coming from? Your water pump is located behind the timing cover, on the passenger side. And you have a timing belt, not chain.

If you have never done a timing belt before, I DO NOT recommend you attempt this procedure. It is time consuming, and many parts have to be removed to gain access to the water pump. For example, you have to remove the power steering bracket out of the way to remove the timing cover. Removing is OK, but re-installing is a pain in the behind. You hardly have enough room to put one of the bolts back in, especially if you don't have the right tool.

Also, please replace the timing belt and tensioner at the same time. It calls for 5.2 hours of labor plus parts.
