1996 Chrysler Cirrus Code 41 open/shorted condition on Alt

I have a 1996 Chrysler Cirrus which runs fine except for the battery not being charged. I used the ignition method to get code 12, 41, and 55 out of the computer. The only one I think of interest is code 41. Which from my haynes manaul indicates I have an Open/ Shorted ciircuit detected on on my alternater field level control circuit. I thought it would be the alternator but that did not fix the problem. I really want to avoid trying a new PCM as the VR is imbedded into the PCM and quit expensive. Does anyone have any trouble shooting advice for this code? Thanks in advance for any help.

thetre are a couplof ways. Probe the field input just in fromt of the pcm. Check for your 12 volts at the other field input on the back of the alternator, then full field at 2000 rpms will let you know if it all can happen, then install an old Chrysler Regulator on any open spot. If you must, give it a ground wire. Then fuise the supply circuit with a 30 to 40 amp max(20 or 25 better). Now run a wire to the bulkead connector for your charge indicator gauge. Use 14 guage from the alternator, and 18 for the field ground and control reference. Many of my friends are running older charging systems. Need a schematic for best results. Or repair the open field circuit.

So my voltage regulator was fine and so was my alternator. I had a melted wire in teh wiring harness which runs to the alternator, ac, and starter. Repaired the short in the wire and all is resolved. The short was on the field control circuit going to the alternator. Thanks for all the help.
