For the last few months, my wifes 02 Venture AWD has been making a whining noise which sounds like its coming from the transmission. Twice I've taken it to the dealership and they are telling me the transmission is shot, that it will cost me ~$3K for a new one w/50K mile warranty.

However, I can still shift the van and it drives, though there seems to be a little slippage; we've stopped driving it to be on the safe side. After doing some research on my own, I've found that it is a 4T65-E transmission; that there could be a solenoid, sensor, linkage, or transmission pump failure. Can you give me some advice on what to look for to determine if it is actually failing and what can be done?

Hello Thanks for the donation Below are a few things that should be inspected prior to just giving up and replacing the transmission..

Let me know how these inspections turn out and I will follow up. Thanks for using 2CarPros.com!

Okay, I may have another option on the transmission, but I want to ask the pros...

There is a 1998 Chevy Venture FWD for $525.00; the owner commented that the transmission is in good/great shape and that the engine has low/no oil pressure AND that he would just find and engine for it and charge $2200 - my research turned up that a broken camshaft is the likely culprit. I may drive down to see the van myself.

Questions I have are:

1. If I buy that van, can I just swap engines witht the 98 ?

2. Am I on target that the camshaft is broken on the 1998 or could it be a mix of things ?

Thank you carpros!

A '98 engine is a bit diff. than the '02 engine so you will need to make sure that it will fit properly and all connections will hook up. The engine having no oil pressure can be caused by a number of things from a faulty oil pump to collapsed oil lines.
