1997 Chevy Van trouble starting and to stay running

when you try to start the van sometimes it does not start, when you let off the key it starts, once it is running it shuts off
I also have a 96 pick up same engine, does the same thing.
I am thinking it could be the coil but not sure tried plugs and other things

First check to see if it is getting fuel, replace fuel filter if necessary, Have the fuel pump checked with you letting off the key and it shuts off there could be a problem there.
