What would make the vechicle difficult to shift from park?

Bent linkage, steering column issues. It could even be a problem with the valve body on your transmission. You would have to start by disconnecting items from your shifter and try them one at a time until you find something that is stiff. Pick one end and start from there. Sometimes you can see something physically preventing it from moving, i.e. wires from a recent alarm install. Hard to tell with out actually looking at it.
