Quadrajet Woes

I am restoring a 1978 C-30 with 350/auto and have the primaries working perfectly from idle to full power pulling a 10,000 pound trailer. If I try to open the secondaries for more power the engine knocks badly. Initial inspection finds everything free and apparently adjusted, and installing the richest metering rod I could get had little effect. I still need MORE POWER!

Are you hearing those secondaries opening? Check the gas pump[ on the top. Do you see fuel pump in? Check with engine off and open the throttle up all the way! Them large secs should open and you should see gas spray in...if not you need to dissasemble and soak it for a min of four hours! Then blow it all out with compressed air...Maybe a pipe cleaner or 2!
