72-chevy impala - transmition.. i think

1972 Chevy Impala starts fine goes backwards fine but when i put it in drive it accelarates but doesn't go forwards. Im thinking its a transmition problem but im not sure....
????plz help

check the shifter linkage, it should be on top of the transmission near the motor, you should be able to see from the top of the block, also check your trans fluid see if its low or burnt, if its burnt it will smell like rotton eggs
