This is a common problem with gm fuel pumps.
The sending unit for the fuel gage is integrated into the fuel pump.
Recently the aftermarket has come out with a replacement sending unit that can be changed on the existing fuel pump, however these fuel pumps are prone to failure at around 60-80000 miles.
If the fuel pump is original then you are already living on borrowed time and my recomendation would be to just change the whole fuel pump as a unit , this should take care of your problem and perhaps forestall another one.
Hope this helps.
