1998 Tahoe will not go in reverse

This morning my husbands 1998 Chevy Tahoe would not go in to reverse. It goes forward fine. What is wrong with it? We have only one Chevy dealer in our small town they have a reputation of being over priced in thier service dept. My husband is smart and mechanical. I would like to help him with this problem before he gets home from work.

Check the transmission fliud, see if it is low or burned ( will be a dark brown and have burn smell to it) if those check out good take it to a transmission specialtist, it more then likely may need to be rebuilt.
