1997 Chevy Truck Fuel Guage

The fuel guage in my 97 chevy 1500 isn't working. The needle is layed all the way over past full. What should I check for/look at?

Chances are the rheostat on the float assembly is bad. It is part of the fuel pump and in the fuel tank.

I've replaced the fuel pump on the truck less than a year ago with a brand new pump. The needle is laying all the way over to the right at a 90 degree angle. Also on the gas tank next to the fuel pump is another small electronic piece. What is this for?
