1992 Chevy Truck starter engages even with key out

I had some work done on my vehicle and when i got it back the starter was making some bad noises, i took it out and saw the shim was bent up so i replaced it and had the starter checked out, it worked fine...then when driving the starter engaged until i could pull over and disconnect the battery cable...the starter burned up, i replaced it with a new/rebuilt one and it's doing the same thing...i admit that when i replaced it the 1st time i forgot to disconnect the battery and the wires arched when it touched metal and sparked a couple of times...could this be where the problem is ?

yes. i suspect the purlpe wire going to the starter (which is the smaller wire) is melted to the positive wire somewhere or the neutral safety switch is fried or the last possibility of a bad ignition switch. to diagnose i would unplug the neutral safety switch and connect battery and see if it tries to start, if it does then the purple wire is melted to the red wire.

It's a 92 chevy truck 4.3 L standard tranny....where might i find the switch ? ( I'll leave you alone after this unless some other problem arises )

it cant be the neutral safetu switch if its a standard, only automatic. the neutral safaty switch is located at the base of the clutch pedal, there are 2 wires to it, purple and yellow. if you unplug the connector to the neutral switch and it still does it then the wire is melted together but if it does not do it when its unplugged then i would suspect a faulty ignition switch.
