1991 Chevy Truck 4wd not engaging

When I put the 4wd lever in 4wd the light comes on but when I try to move forward the gears grind in the 4wd part of the drive train. it has auto 4wd locking hubs. Where should I start, there was no warning of this failiar.

Hey ketchum, A friend of mine had a GMC Somoma and the 4wd wouldnt engage either. We fixed it when we realized the vacuum line that ran to the front differential was not connected. I dont know how yours engages, but would be worth checking.

See if you can locate a wire or line from the front differential and trace it.

Thanks, I checked the line is there, there are 2 sets of wires going to the front diff. 1 is for the accuator and the other goes into the dif.
