I had a rebuilt 350 installed in my 1987 Chevy R10 a year ago. I have driven it sparingly since, and a month ago, I began noticing a "popping" sound coming from the exhaust. There also seems to be a strong fuel smell coming from the exhaust tips. However, when I accelerate i don't notice the problem as bad, and it hasn't diminished my horsepower greatly. New fuel filter? Time for a tune-up? or something more serious?

Check the engine compression if okay give it a major tune-up and check igniiton timing. Fuel smell could be running rich
