My gauges all go wacky when I turn on the headlights. The dash won't light, the directionals both glow dimly. Everything works fine out on the body, but
I suspect a bad ground for the instrument panel.... Where is that on an old Chevy pickup?

Welcome to the forum. My wiring info is limited on your model year. Usually the dash lights get feed from the headlamp switch. Check the fuses, instrument or gage fuses, use a testlite to make sure the fuse circuit is hot. The fuse may not go hot unless the headlamp switch is on, just depends on how it's wired? I don't have a location for the ground, at the dash, the ground wire is black, if you suspect a problem, try a redundant ground, see if it helps.
