Electrical problem

Last week on a road trip we came close to running out of fuel - gauge down in the red but the low fuel light had not come on. Got to a garage and filled the tank up. The service engine soon light came on and the gauge did not show full - in fact it showed empty. Over the next couple of days the gauge would slowly come up to half full or so then go back down to empty. The service engin soon light went out. Then it just seemed to start working again. At about a quarter full we refilled the tank again and the gauge again read empty. Suggestions?
