when i am in 4 wheel drive or auto (which automatically engages 4wd when needed) I hear a noise that sound like jets landing and it is worse when i deccelerate. any clues? this sound is not there when i have it strictly in 2wd.

Check fluid level in transfer case, if OK then it may be transfer case control switch, shift motor, or control module. Have it checked by dealer or trusted garage.

Dealer would probably be best, since it may be out of warranty, it is pretty close, and they may pay for part of it.
