This summer while vacationing, the check engine light came on, we had it checked and the serviceman said it was safe to drive, but could experience worsening of gas mileage unless fixed. The light has been off and on for last couple months, so took it in again and the code said that the thermostat was bad. Temp in engine never got above 140 (should be around 190 or so I guess). The mechanic replaced the thermostat and while in their said the water pump was loose and replace that as well. This guy is not the type to rip me off as he's a friend of the family. Anyway, after all this, I'm getting only about 10 MPG driving around town and before light warning, we were probably getting 14-15 MPG in town, 19-20 highway. Originally when the mechanic looked at it on vacation, I don't remember him mentioning the thermostat, but something else. What other problem could I have that is dragging down my MPG so much?
