I drive a 2001 Chevy Tahoe. It has been surging while driving for about 4 weeks now. The check engine light came on 7 days ago and then went off a day later. Once again today the light came back on so I took it to a mechanic and he said it was because of the EGR valve. The mileage is approx. 85000 the engine is a 5.3L Vortec. The transmission was overhauled aout 7 months ago. Could the EGR valve be the cause of the surging. If so, does it need replacing or is there another cure?

You can try cleaning it out to be sure no carbon or other build up is holding it slightly open when it needs to be closed
