My cooling system has been slowly losing coolant. On heater hose that attaches to block just behind the alternator there is a lot of crud/dried red junk at the connection. So, assuming this is leaking how do I replace this hose? It has a weird connection. Is it some type of quick-connect fitting?[img:bed09d7939]http://www.2carpros.com/forum/automotive_pictures/362172_upper_heater_hose_connection_1.jpg[/img:bed09d7939]

do i need to replace the hose that has the male end attached, the female connector threaded into the block or both to stop the leak?

Yes it is a quick connect fitting.

There are two types, one has plastic tabs, you squeeze them and connection pulls apart. This may take some work, because it looks to be pretty crudded up. If metal connection, you can buy an inexpensive special tool at any auto parts stores to remove.
Most cooling system are the plastic type. I would also flush the cooling system and get rid of that Dex-Cool (my opinion). Prestone, Peak and auto parts store brands can be used, they mix with any color, all makes, all models. This guide can help you fix it

There is an "O" ring that provides the acutal seal. I would clean it up and inspect the O ring.

You can replace the O ring if you think it needs it and the plastic or metal ring should also be replaced.

I actually just replaced the part you're talking about the other day. It's called a heater control valve, i picked one up at NAPA for $14.99. It stopped that from leaking and isn't to hard to install.
