1998 Chevy Tahoe Slipping transmission.

This doesn't happen all the time but i notice it sometimes. Truck seems to surge coming from a stop sign almost as if the transmission is slipping slightly. I can hit the gas hard and do not notice any slipping. Seems to only be at start from a stop and when up to highway speeds i can feel it sometimes also. The last couple days is smells a llittle hot coming from underneath the truck. Recently had it in for an oil change and the dealership said i have a leak where the drive shaft comes out of the transfer case. Could this be low fluid in the transfer case causing this? I checked the transmission level and the its fine and the oil doesn't smell too bad and it is still red. What should i be checking? I do allot of maintainence myself and the transmission filter and fluid was changed about 1 3/4 years ago and the transfer case was changed 1 year ago.

Firstly the transfer oil leak wont be your main concern, but that should be rectified anyway, it should only be a flange seal. As for the transmission issue, the problem with modern autos is that they are so complex you need to have access to quite a bit of special equipment to do most repair work, I would be re checking the pan and seeing if there is any indication of clutch material being deposited, the next step would be a transmission specialist doing a systems pressure check and checking the shift pressures, this is usually beyond the capabilities of most general mechanic's, auto specialists are set up to quickly diagnose these problems, and the quicker you get it tested the less potential damage you will do.
