1997 Chevy Tahoe crank position sensor

1997 Chevy Tahoe V8 Automatic

I have a 97 tahoe and the motor was rebuilt before I got it and it didn't run well come to find out they didn't put a crank sensor on it and i don't know if they used the crank that goes to that year either so can I by pass that or do i need to get the timing chain cover that goes to it and crank or can use the crank thats used and put the ring that is needed for the sensor
