1996 Chevy Tahoe Rear axle

When pulling out of my driveway,my truck reversed fine,but as soon as I put it into drive,I felt a big "clunk" as if something fell off of the back end. When I tried to press on the gas or reverse, the truck would not go anywhere. I was wondering if you know what this could be. Could this be the rear axle?
