I have a 2001 Suburban 5.3l 1500 4wd. At 159K I needed to replace the rear axle(loud griding and would not move unless in 4wd). At 163K I am experiancing the same issue. The diff that went in was used with 65K on it. Is there a history of these failing? I do tow a trailer from time to time but would think that this machine should handle it. The ratio is 3.73 am I able to change it and would that help? Other than this issue this has been a great car with little trouble from day one.

Unfortunately my diff on our 03 Suburban Z71 went out at 56k.. it was 600 to fix, I have found this is a prob and reported to NHTSA... others had the same issues, sorry for your probs :(

I have noticed that on my rearend failure happened after I changed a tire. It was damaged and the set had 20k on them. The new tire was the same type but new. 5k later the rear end is broken. I believe the tire size difference however small was just enough to overheat the lube and cause a failure.
