2004 Chevy Suburban Temperature Gauge

2004 CHEVROLET SUBURBAN
135,000 MILES • V8 • 4WD • AUTOMATIC

The temperature guage on our 2004 Suburban occasionally stops working and sometimes shows about 1/2 of what I would expect the temp to be.

At this point Im willing to replace the sending unit since they seem cheap enough. I'd appreciate some directions on where exactly it is located and or another suggestion as to what to look at or replace.

For what liter engine? 5.0. 5.7L ??

It is a 4dr 1500 4WD Z71 with a 8 Cyl 5.3L/327 Gas engine.

Check nearby the thermostat housing or at the housing

Can you tell me in relation to the radiator (like top tube coming off the right side of the radiator)? I dont know where the thermostat housing is either.

Thanks! I found it. Picture is worth a 1000 words.

I checked the wires and they look ok. I was kind of hoping that I'd see some chewed wiring which would make for an easy fix.

So my next things was to replace sensor. If I unsrew and pull out the sensor will I have coolant pouring out?

Also do you have any other recomendations for things to try?
