I recently ran out of gas in our 04 Suburban. It has a flaky fuel sending unit that gets hung at 1/4 occasionally. We usually monitor the mileage and fill up around 400 miles so its usually no problem. We didn't fill up all the way last time so we ran out at 376! OOPS! This is probably the 3rd or 4th time we ran it dry in the last year. This time, I had to beat on the tank to get the pump to start pumping. We are about to go on a long family road trip and I am wondering if I should replace the pump before we go. It seems to be fine but I have read that it should be replaced if it locks up that way. Not sure if I should take a gamble or spend 440 bucks out of our vacation fund before the trip begins to replace it. I priced the pump at $290 and have a mechanic friend who will put it in for 150.00.

Replace pump when run dry or real low pump heats up. Better now than on the side of the road. also fix sender at same time
