The "Service 4x4" light just came on and I noticed the
indicator lights on the dashboard switchs are out and the car will not shift into 4 wheel drive.

Have you had the computer scanned? Most parts stores will do it for free. ALso, have you checked to see if there is power to the 4wd actuator on the transfer case?
