Please answer my questions as I presented them to you. The truck has 225k on it and I didnt think putting 300 into it was really an expense at all. The fuel pump has never been changed and the filter only once. No pressure test required as it acts as if it running out of gas as i drive. Start-up are as if there is gas at all. Easy to define the problem without testing.
I am seeking a quieter runnning fuel pump. BUt would like the best one also. The hoises that i referred to are only the ones from the pump itself to itys juntions. flexible hoses. . Can you recommend a desired fuel filter ?

Thank You.

If you owned this vehicle originally and it didn't come with the noise, I recommend only OEM parts.

The gas filter under the driver seat has two steel lines going into this can. On the end of the steel lines (both of them --they have an o-ring. I had AutoZone and O'reily's tell me that it does not need these. I afraid I do not believe them. How is right and if needed to I need to go to the dealer.

Hi Tim,

I am not sure what o-rings you are referring to. Can you get a picture and that will help explain? I am not aware of any so I would think they are correct. I attached the process and they don't mention them either.

should be under drivers side along frame rail and a couple wrenches should do the trick.1 to hold filter nut and the other to break line loose/unscrew.

check fuel pressure to ensure there are no restrictions. if pressure is OK then check spark at the plugs, make sure it is bright blue spark.

sorry didn't realize it was diesel.

test the glow plugs first

Pull the electrical connector wires off to expose access to the glow plugs. Removing one plug at a time, place the socket over the top of the glow plug and turn it counterclockwise to remove.
Clean the threads of the glow plug with solvent and a rag.
Set your voltmeter to "Ohms" (Ω) and touch the electrodes of the voltmeter to the glow plug.
Check to see if the resistance shown on the meter indicates "∞". If it does, then the plug is defective. If the glow plug shows resistance that is approximately less than 5 Ω, then the plug is not defective.
Repeat above steps for each glow plug.

i assume you mean the gas filter

you need a 13/16 open end wrench and a 5/8 line wrench to remove the lines from the filter.

be carefull of the fuel that will come out. use protection on your hands and saftey glasses.

the fuel tank has to be removed to gain acess to the top of the tank so you can remove the pump module.

it is a very involved job as the tank needs to be supported properly so you do not drop it. it is harder if it is full.

you may want to get a shop to do it for you as it is dangerous.

Sorry for the late reply.

The fuel filter should be mounted to inside frame rail, you'll need to get under the vehicle. Usually after the vehicle sits overnight without the key being cycled, there isn't much fuel pressure, but, you still need to be aware. You can disable fuel pump by pulling fuse then try to start the vehicle, to take pressure off system. Slowly take line nuts loose from filter, use a catch pan. Don't let gas hit a droplight. Don't do this in a closed garage or around any pilot lites.

To work on your own vehicles, you need a basic set of wrenches and sockets. I don't remember the actual size wrenches? The picture I posted should show you what the filter looks like.

I realize this an old post. In the future hope you don't have any vehicle issues, but, if do, keep the site in mind. They are always working to improve the site and it's free to ask a question.

Have a good day.

Car is 1997 Suburban 5.7L

I know how to change a fuel filter, and have done so.

I have also changed other things with steel lines and compression fittings such as camshaft driven fuel pumps, brakes, etc.

What I never want to do again is round off the nut holding the line onto--in this case the filter.

I am using a 5/8" line wrench, and it seems like it just does not want to turn. I have sprayed oil on it over some days, now. Different kinds. Today I bought a new can that advertises it is special penetrating oil.

I got to wondering if maybe it was metric. I did the conversion on the computer and 5/8 is between 15mm and 16mm. The 15mm wrench is too big.

Any advice???

it should be standard and it really depends on what brand of tools you use , i have nothing aginst craftsman but their wrenches spread over time causing this problem, i found this out years ago and bought all snap on and mac tools since and never had that problem again try a good wrench if your not already
good luck

Try heating it with a torch.

Okay maybe not....

Funny seems like sometimes there is a secret size out there that you never have.

I would go to a vise grip that is larger enough to adequately grab on, get a good bite on the flats, and turn it IN a touch and turn it OUT a touch, and back and forth until you get more and more movement.

There are line wrenches that are valuable

I said the 15mm was too big. I meant that it was too small.

The 5/8 is a little wiggly (not much, though). My conversion shows 5/8 would be 15.875 mm. So, getting smaller would be 15mm, but that is too small.

I will probably try the vise grip pliers since someone mentioned it.

I had thought of that, but thought people usuially saved that for when the nut was already rounded.

OR, I could chicken out and take it to someone else and hold them responsible--but that seems like a mean thing to do, so I would feel like I would have to disclose why I was taking it to them.

You can be sure when or if you chicken out that the mechanic will know why.

And yeah i would save that for when the nut gets rounded, but if you can squeeze it on the flats you might be fine!
