engine noise has increased?

Hi there,

you will need to get the car on a hoist and inspect the exhaust for damage, there is a good chance that you have ripped a pipe or smashed a muffler, you will need to have a good look at the sump & steering as well just to be safe.

at idle my truck makes a scratching noises at acceleration it goes to a tapping noises i have no ideal were it is coming from it sounds like it could be coming from the engine

I want you to try something. With the engine at an idle when you hear the scratching noise, pour a little water on the serp belt to see if the sound stops. Keep in mind the water will spray when it hits, so watch your eyes.

Let me know what happens. If it doesn't stop, I need you to try some other things.

Could it be a catylatic converter which came apart inside and is making noise or an exhaust leak? An exhaust manifold gasket can make a tapping sound when the engine is under a load, and you may hear a slight leak at an idle. (I wish I could hear it!)

this problem just started on my way to work it is a squealing noise under the hood that also sounds like it is coming through the defrost vents on the top of the dash but i can also hear it outside. Any suggestions.?

Could be a pulley or belt driven component, tensioner, blower motor. etc. With a mechanics stethescope go around different components to indentify where the noise is coming from.

Noises problem
1999 Chevy Silverado V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic

Kind of sounds like the noise could be a fan blade knocking, but I checked while the engine was off and fan was not touching anything. What else could this be?

Here is wat I recommend, but you must follow my directions.

remove the accessory drive belt from the front of the engine. Start the truck and see if the sound is gone. Only run the engine for up to 20 seconds to determine if the noise is gone because there will be no water circulation from the water pump and the engine will quickly overheat. (DO NOT DRIVE THE TRUCK LIKE THIS!)

I recently had to fill my radiator and overflow tank, i was leaking water but couldnt find the source. it hasnt leaked for a few days, but levels are holding fine after only filling it that one time. The only other work done on it was replaceing the AC system over a year ago. Just today a humming noise started in front by the fan belt. At just an Idle, its and while driving it sounds like humming that gets louder then softer. Water levels remain the same, no signs of leaking. Any suggestions?

Have you checked the belt tensioner to make sure it is not going bad? could be that or a bearing in the idler or alt. or water pump...could be the fan clutch...just a few things you could check....another possibility could be the transmission...they start to "hum" when low on fluid and change pitch with RPM's sometimes sounds like it is coming from the front of the engine. good luck.

1997 chevy truck with 350. It is 6 degrees outside, I started mty truck for the first time since yesterday. When it first starts, there is an errr noise for about 1 second then it doesn't do it until I go to start up the next day. Any ideas?

Chances are the cold weather is affecting the starter. Check to see if that is where the noise is coming from and let me know. Just open the hood and listen in that direction while a helper starts the truck for you.

So I have a 1994 Chevy K1500 that has been a great truck but is now having some issues that worry me. It recently got cold here in Nevada and since then my truck has been idling really rough and has lost a good bit of power. Along with that it now ticks really loud when under a load. It does it around 40-50mph at about 2,000 rpm but never when in park or neutral no matter how much I rev it. I just did an oil change on it and followed my mechanics advice on using a heavier weight oil (10W-30) as opposed to the usual 5W-30 that the oil cap says. I thought it was the valves ticking but everything I've read suggests that if that was the cause it would be constant and not just when I'm driving. The pattern seems to stay exactly in line with the rpms though so I'm at a loss. Anybody have an idea of what it could be and how much it's going to cost? Thank you.

pull valve covers off and rev up to about 2000 rpm check for a bent/broken pushrod or lifter. see if all vavles are working correctly all going down about same amount at idle. migh tbe a vavle guide as well with to much play in it.

Thank you. I'll try that and see what they look like. Could it possibly be the spark plugs? I pulled one just a little while ago and they looked pretty black.

it could be but if black it may be rich or valve seals leaking hence the valve guides worn

I replaced the plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor. Also, did an oil change with a new filter and now it's gotten worse. I've had a dramatic loss in oil pressure while driving and idling. So I parked it and haven't driven since. But when I first started the truck the oil pressure is at about 50-60 psi, then once I started driving and it warmed up it dropped down to about 10-15 when idling and sat at about 30 while driving. The ticking was still no where to be found in park or neutral and still only did it at around 2,000 rpm. The truck runs really rough now too. It feels like it's bogged down idling and wants to die and accelerates very slowly and cruises rough as well. I've pretty much exhausted my abilities as an amateur and I'm sure it's something internal at this point due to the change in oil pressure. It's also puffing little bits of blue smoke out of the exhaust when it idles. Thank you for all your help this far also. Any other advice would be much appreciated .

oil pressure is normal check your compression

Chirping noise under hood. Is it the pulleys?

may be pulleys or a worn drive belt, also a soft tension-er if an auto adjust tension-er is installed can do this, you can remove the belt and start to prove that the problem is here. if so start with a new belt and feel all pulleys for notchy movement, start here.

I believe you also have an Idler Pulley on that engine. It look just about like the tensioner except that it is stationary...

You can check the pulley by...

Spraying the center bolt with a spray lube with engine off then start it if no squeal then replace pulley. Another possibility is the water pump bearings.

i sprayed wd_40 on the bolt on the tenssioner pulley and the noise stops but thats a brand new pulley i just replace it wen it started making the noise

Did you spray the pulley with the engine running? If so you may have also sprayed the belt. It is possible the new belt could be the problem, have seen that a few times.

If making noise again spray the bolt again before starting. Also when replace the pulley did you make sure it spun freely? With some new pulleys the original washer doesn't work so well and will cause problems.

the engine was off wen i sprayed the pulley and the pulley does spin freely. i will replace the washer to see if that does anything.

something else i notice is when im doin turns the squeling noises gets louder. i dont know if that means anything

Without actually hearing the noise, all I can do is guess. Considering the engine has 190K on it, it could be a worn valve lifter or rocker arm. Worse case scenario, it could be a rod bearing which would be terminal. A good shop should be able to pinpoint it for you just by listening to it. Hope this helps.

Have you sprayed the belt? If not spray some lube on the belt. With the squeal getting louder when turning wheel could be the belt or even one of the other pulley bearings. If spraying the belt doesn't quiet the squeal try spraying the pulley bearing on the Alternator (even though it is new), A/C Compressor, etc. One at a time.
