P0342 Cam Sensor Replacement?

You are going to need a scan tool to read parameter identification. Also will need to disconnect the sensor a verify 12 volt reference. If there are no short to grounds, or other wiring issues and no debris between the sensor and the reluctor ring, you could have a bad CMP sensor or in the worst case a bad PCM. The sensor is located behind the #2 knock sensor on top of the lower plenum.Here is the location of the camshaft sensor in the diagrams below. Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know what happens.

Had the code read with the scanner tool but no parameter reference. Where is the reluctance ring?
Where would debris come from? Engine has never been touched and only has 13,000 miles?

The reluctor ring is on the camshaft. Think of the CMP as a distributor, it's where distributors used to be.

Parameter ID is seeing how the component is acutally functioning via the scan tool. For instance, the PID for CMP, you would want to watch the low to high and the high to low transition.

Is there a color code for the wire connector so I can correctly test for the presence of the 12 volts? Is the CMP Hall effect or magnetic on this engine?

Test for 12 volt reference at the CMP connector. Hall effect is the measurement of the magnetic field.

Where is the Camshaft Position sensor located?

Could you please re post with the engine size as there are fitted in different positions depending on size. But i will guess it is a 8.1 Liter and it will be on the left side of the timing cover.

CHEV SILVER-ADO VORTEX MOTOR V8 PETROL 2002. Runs rough and service light comes on. Showed diagnostic for air flow and cam sensor zeroed codes then ran and cam sensor code is back. It is O.K when cold but stalls and won't start. Where is the cam sensor found?

What are the exact code numbers being set?

MY SCAN TOOL IS ONE THAT IS CONNECTED TO MY LAP TOP AND IT TELLS ME AIR FLOW CONNECTION FAULT AND CAM SENSOR ELECTRICAL FAULT.AFTER CLEARING THE CODES AND STARTING THE MOTOR THE ENGINE SERVICE LIGHT WAS OFF FOR ABOUT ONE MINUTE AND THEN CAME BACK ON. CHECKED CODES AGAIN AND NOW ONLY CAM SENSOR ELECTRICAL FAULT.

I will check it again I think a number and letter was before the description of what the fault was.I have looked around the bell housing area for a crank sensor and can't find it. I will be in New Zealand next week and may be able to get what I need in Australia or New Zealand. Will read codes this afternoon.

It's not starting up right away you have to really crank it, then it will turn over. It was code P0342. Not sure if that is why my gas gauge keeps saying low fuel even after I have filled the tank up.

Scanned the codes again and it comes up with CODE P1345 SORE DTC Number 1 SGC (Cam Position)SENSOR CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION / CRANKSHAFT POSITION
CAMSHAFT POSITION CORRELATION.
The vehicle is a 350 chev Vortec
VIN 2GEC19R5V1195576 and I think the year should be 1995 not 2002

Two different problems. It sounds like you have a fuel pump and sender problem as well as the cam code. The sensor issue could be a broken or chewed wire or bad connection or even a bad sensor. You would need a scan tool to test it to find the problem. The fuel level problem is the sending unit in the tank, very common for them to fail. For that you either remove the truck bed or drop the fuel tank to get access to the top of the tank, then remove and replace the fuel pump module.

Just as I suspected, that is not indicating a malfunction in any component. It's telling you that the Cam sensor is not synched with the Crank sensor and that is because the distributor was installed wrong. You need to use a professional scan tool that had a PID for Cam offset and you need to turn the distributor with the engine running until that PID reads "0" degrees. Then the code will not reset.

That VIN says it's a 97 with a 5.7, made in Canada.

Don't confuse turning that distributor with setting timing. It does not. The timing is predetermined and moving the distributor only takes the primary and secondary ignition out of synch with each other along with the injectors.

i have a 01 silverado v6 truck replaced the engine with a 1997 v6 blazer engine the cam sensor is different what can i do. I replaced the engine of a 2001 chevy truck v6 with a 1997 blazer 4.3 l v6 identical. Engine same thing so i put it in the 2001 chevy connected everything but when i came to connect the sensor of the cam it was different what adaptions can i do on the cam sensors ?

I looked at acdelco cam sensor. Blazer 95--05, Silverado 1500 99--06, same cam sensor according to the online parts book. You can get cam sensor connector with pig tail wires from same online parts book. Just look at them, find the connector you need. I site is rock auto.
