2002 Chevy Silverado Chatter noise

It started about 2 mos. ago, I noticed at lower speeds when I turn steering wheel and go over rough roads I hear like a chatter noise like metal hitting metal. I had new shocks installed about three years ago. I also had a friend mechanic do a visual check of suspension and tie rods and etc: did not notice anything lose. What could it be very annoying and worried about when I tow my 5th wheel south for winter if it will be okay. Please help

Is the noise only in the front? If so have you checked the hub bearing and the brake caliper? Let me know what you find.

The nosie is more noticeable at lower speeds and turning a corner while suspension is bouncing, thats when I hear the chatter or knock knock noise the most. I also can feel it ever so slit in the steering wheel. I believe it is the sound traveling to the steering wheel. This is not easy to explain.

Ok I would say then that the noise is in the front end. I would check the torsion bar and torsion bar crossmember and crossmember mount. Here is a pic of what I am refering too as far as the mount. You are looking for any up and down movement and don't be affraid to use a pri bar to check for it as this bar has tension but when the mount is bad it will bang and make noise over bumps and if you turn to one side it will unload the tension off the other side and can sometimes make it louder on the unloaded side. The part number as 3 is the mount that I am refering to. Let me know what you find.

Check the linkage between the steering wheel shaft and the half shaft the connects to the steering box. See if there is a noise when you shake it. I had a clunking sound on mine and it required the grease in the steering shaft to be repacked. GM dealers sell a repair kit and it is easy to do at home. Did my 2003 twice.

The noise turned out to be the steering shaft. it must have been worn some how enough to make noise inside the steering column.
