2000 Chevy Silverado Tranny Not Shifting

My truck has been going from overdrive to what seems like neutral then into second gear when I either pass someone or try to get up to speed. But then it will be fine for awhile until it happens again. Today the engine died on me as I was driving it while it was stuck in second gear. What was unusual is that the thing just died for no reason, and would not start again. It just clicks when you turn the key but does nothing. Also as soon as it died the light that highlights what gear it is in quite working, so now you cannot see what gear its in. I even put more gas in it thinking that was it. Could it be a computer or module problem? It runs great when its not doing this but this is the first time its died on me. Or is it maybe a twofold tranny and something else now? Please help I'm stumped.

First thing to test is the battery and alternator, all circuits need 9-10 volts minimu to work! Pcm cant function and control the system with poor electrical feed.

The battery and the alternator are fine. What I am wondering is if the two issues could be related or not?

If you are saying on the one hand, when you try to start it, it just clicks, that means the starting circuit isnt supplied with enough voltage to crank the starter, this is an electrical problem, usually a low charge or battery cable problem. Stored codes will tell if the PCM/TCM has a detected a problem. Tell me what the voltmeter reads for battery voltage.

The battery has 12.1. I think it may be the fuel pump , cause I dont hear it when I turn the key on. Hey does the computer store codes for the transmission even if the check engine light is not coming on?

Do yourselfd a favor, remove and clean the cables, at both ends for the negative cable. Remove the neg(-) first and install it last. There may be "freeze frame data" stored in memory. Read the memory before cleaning the cables. Like I said if the engine just clicks, the juice aint makin it to the starter.

Look I appreciate the help, but the clicking im describing is the starter trying to start the engine. I know, I know you only can go off of what im telling you but thats my bad. The battery is not the problem, trust me. Anyway, thanks for the attempt to help me but this has been a waste. Its too hard to get help from just trying to describe the problem. I do not want to be charged for this! Please have them cancel or give me a refund.

Double A, Does the engine crank? Or just a clicking? If batt is good and starter just clicks, starter must be replaced, if it cranks, and doesnt start it is another problem, what does it do?

Have you done a relearn on the pass-key?
GM PASS LOCK RELEARN- Ignition to "run" position, try to start and let key return to "run" position
Approx ten minutes security light will go off
Turn key "off" and wait 5 seconds
Repeat 2 more times for a total of 3 relearns.
Turn key off, then start it

Hey I tried it, but the security light flashed along with the battery symbol, and a low fuel light for about 16 minutes then I tried it 3 times and nothing changed. The security light never went out.

TEST 2: SECURITY INDICATOR LIGHT ALWAYS ON OR FLASHING Turn ignition on, engine off. Using scan tool, command SECURITY indicator light ON and OFF. If SECURITY indicator light turned on and off with scan tool command, see DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Better off paying the hundred bucks to have it scanned, tools that can read and command Mods are over 2000.00! You might want to just pull the cluster and inspect for loose pins where the connectors go, and resolder them...

What makes you think its in the instrument cluster? How sure are you that its in there?

this is in the steps for diagnosing the security light stying on or constantly flashing...that's why you need a tool that can command the module on and off. But GM clusters are known to have problems!
If you install one, just turn the key to on for 10 seconds and it will be good to go. Scanning removes all doubt!
